Τhe Effects of Use of Mobile Telephones in Childhood

The possibility of unlimited telephone communication, along with the use of multimedia, is nowadays achieved through the use of mobile telephones. The function of a mobile telephone network depends on the antenna incorporated in the device and on the installation of a base station antenna. The aim of the study is a review of the research evidence concerning the effects of the mobile telephone radiation on children’s health. Research to date in humans has focused on the investigation of a possible correlation of mobile telephone radiation with the development of tumours and the appearance of non-specific chronic symptoms, such as headaches and dizziness, and cardiovascular disease. Research findings indicate that mobile telephone use influences the interpersonal relations of children in their daily life, and that its continuous use may affect hearing. An association of mobile telephone use has been demonstrated with symptoms such as headache, sleeping disorders, poor concentration and sudden increases in body heat and flushing. The appropriate use of hands-free devices does not appear to increase exposure to the electromagnetic radiation of mobile telephones, while use of the Bluetooth reduces it. The available research data do not confirm that exposure to the low level electromagnetic fields of mobile telephone technology has repercussions on human health. However, long-term effects cannot be excluded and therefore, for preventive reasons, pointless or excessive use of mobile telephones with exposure to radiation should be avoided, particularly in childhood and adolescence.
