Εvaluation of students' attitudes towards smoking and alcohol consumption

Abstract

Aim: This research examined the attitudes of under-graduate and post-graduate students of the University of Athens about cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption. MATERIAL-Method: An exploratory survey was employed that contained a combination of 37 semantic-items and open-ended questions. 136 under- and post-graduate students aged 18–27 years who study in the Faculty of Nursing, University of Athens, completed the questionnaire. Results: The data indicated that smoking status was a personal selection for 74% of the respondents; meanwhile 26% reported that peer pressure was the primary reason to start smoking. Regarding alcohol, 80% of the students reported that alcohol consumption was a common habit; meanwhile 49% of them reported that they never felt the need to stop drinking alcohol. 47% of the students reported no problems from alcohol consumption; meanwhile smokers reported higher alcohol consumption than non smokers.
