Introduction: Patients with gynecological cancer are subject to a significant burden at a physical, psychological, social and spiritual level. Body image and sexuality are aspects of human existence and quality of life that are affected by gynecological cancer.
Purpose: To investigate the relationship between body image and sexuality in women with gynecological cancer.
Material & Method: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted, with convenience sampling. The study was carried out from January to June 2023 in oncology clinics and a day care unit of two central hospitals in Athens. Body Appreciation Scale (BAS) and Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaires were used to measure body image and sexuality, respectively.
Results: The sample consisted of 100 women diagnosed with gynecological cancer (endometrial or body of the uterus, cervix, ovaries, vagina and vulva). The mean age of the women was 62 years and the mean time since cancer diagnosis was 3 years. Women had low body image and sexual dysfunction in 79%. Body image showed a positive low correlation with the total score of sexuality (r=0.299, p<0.001), and was statistically significantly correlated with sexual desire (r=0.276, p<0.001), hydration (r= 0.215, p<0.05), orgasm (r=0.200, p<0.05) and satisfaction (r=0.256, p<0.05).
Conclusions: Body image and sexuality are in a binary relationship of interaction that needs further investigation, in order to meet the needs of women with gynecological cancer in a total and holistic way.
