Investigating interventions to improve safety in pediatric nursing

Introduction: The safety of hospitalized pediatric patients is an issue of concern to the global nursing community. Several nursing interventions have been tried to improve safety in these patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the interventions to improve safety in pediatric nursing.
Method: This is a systematic review of the literature in the electronic databases Scopus and PubMed, with the keywords “safety, hospitalized, children, pediatric nursing”. The inclusion criteria for the articles in the study are: to be written in the English language, from 2016-2023, in valid scientific journals and relevant to the topic of the study. The PICOS process and the PRISMA methodology were followed for the selection and evaluation of study articles and 14 articles were included in the study.
Results: The main interventions to improve the safety of hospitalized pediatric patients were: checklists, brief structured discussions, organization and work environment, mHealth applications, electronic prescribing system, virtual simulation, education, participation of parents, communication, telephone follow-up, management of alarms and non-routine events during patient delivery.
Conclusions: Nursing interventions appear to be able to improve the safety of hospitalized children. Further study of these interventions will provide strong evidence for improving their safety.
