Psychosocial Problems in Hemodialysis Patients: Changes at Psychological, Family, Professional, Social and Economic Level

Abstract

Introduction: The process of hemodialysis, despite the progress of Medicine and Nursing, has adverse effects on patient’s daily life, especially in family, social and occupational aspects. Furthermore, the patient’s psychological state is burdened by various disorders’ manifestation, such as depression, which significantly reduces their quality of life. Aim: To assess the changes in the psychological status of hemodialysis patients, the effects caused by the change of residence, roles and relationships in the family, job roles, financial problems and changes in social activities. Method: For the research of the relevant literature the databases Pubmed and ScienceDirect (1994-2013) were reviewed using the following keywords: renal failure, hemodialysis, quality of life, psychοlogical disorders. Results: The daily life of hemodialysis patients significantly changes at family, social, professional and psychological level. The role of the family in patient’s support is significant. Potential family conflicts should be addressed directly through support from health professionals so the quality of patients’ and their family members’ lives not exacerbated dramatically. Conclusions: The social, economic and psychological support, as well as the treatment of any psychological disorder, is necessary for both patients and their family members.
