Abstract

This paper presents a comparative analysis of psychiatric care in Sweden and Greece, focusing on their historical trajectories, major mental health reforms, systemic crises, and future prospects. Although both countries share similar population sizes, they differ substantially in terms of policy direction, organizational structure, and approach to mental illness. Sweden's long-standing investment in deinstitutionalization and community-based psychiatry has promoted higher standards of care and inclusivity. Conversely, Greece’s efforts have been repeatedly stalled by political and economic crises, delaying key reform programs such as “Psychargos.” The review highlights the urgent need for enhanced community mental health services, better training of healthcare professionals, and sustained political commitment. The post-COVID-19 rise in mental health disorders further underscores the need for proactive mental health strategies centered on prevention, early intervention, and social reintegration.
