Psychosexual function in patients with psychosis (Schizophrenia)

Introduction: Patients with psychosis (schizophrenia) experience significant difficulties in their sexual function, resulting in negative psychological effects. Material and Method: The current review examines the research findings from 33 empirical studies, which analyze the sexual behavior in patients with psychosis (schizophrenia). The research was conducted via data bases (PubMed, Expanded Academic, PsycINFO, Web of Science). Results: Totally 33 articles were used in this review which examine sexual function in patients with psychosis (schizophrenia). The study of these articles shows that in terms of sexual fantasies no significant difference has been found between people with psychosis and the general population, mental health professionals do not pay due attention to the sexual life of their patients, the main factor influencing Adverse to patients 'sexual function is considered to be antipsychotic medication, while sexual dysfunction adversely affects patients' quality of life. Conclusion: A better approach requires a holistic approach which will not only provide us a better understanding of the issue but will contribute a better treatment and inclusion of patients. Mental rehabilitation programs for patients with psychosis (schizophrenia) rarely include sex education as a key component. Sex education courses will help patients understand their sexual needs and desires. In addition it would be beneficial to have appropriate sex education for medical and nursing staff in order to achieve a better communication with patients on sexual issues.
